This current vice-principal of a Southern California school was a student jockstrap in high school and often took drugs with his teammates because he matt-up pressure to do so. He said that he would cod welcomed a mandatory drug-testing policy when he was a student.
I'm not trying to excuse myself - I knew that what I was doing was wrong and that I shouldn't buckle under to peer pressure. barely I do think that it can be especially hard for an athlete, because you occur so much of your time being told that you're part of a team. And of course you are part of a team. And that just do it really hard for me to turn down my teammates even when it was something duncical like fetching drugs. Tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, barbiturates, inhalants -- any abusable substance. We know a phenomenal amount. What we also know is that each of these drugs has its own receptor system -- its own mechanism of action. But in addition to having idiosyncratic mechanisms of action, each also has joint mechanisms of action. That common mechanism of action is to cause the release of dopamine, a substance in the base of the brain, in what is actually a circuit called the mesolimbic reward pathway.
