The Opposing Ideas of Whitman and Dickinson

The poetry of each poet reflects a similar distinction. Whitman's poetry is effusive, a torrent of words grasp out to an audience. Emily Dickinson also used herself as prime subject in her poems, but she differs from Whitman in that where he examined the macrocosm of the world, she observes the microcosm of her own circumscribed world. She represented the world in the small things around her, and she make many of these into symbols of ideas, states of nature, and emotions. Her works express these inner feelings in a new and indirect way, and while some of her poems have a narrative, most are immediate expressions of feelings and ideas as the poet explores whatever of the world presents itself to her.
