A good example of memory being unreliable would be in testimonial accounts. For example when witnesses are put in front of a legal philosophy lineup and asked to finger a perpetrator they are wrong twenty percent of the time. That is a terrible inaccuracy when you consider an innocent individual would be release to jail.

Memory inaccuracies has become a hot topic of late when it comes to the law so much that they have changed the way police lineups are presented. One of the main reasons for the change is because of the way an incumbent may present each person to the witness.
