It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a unmarried man in possession of a good fortune, mustiness be in want of a wife. We are employ to saying that the first sentence of a novel is quite a important and emblematic, and so it is. These first lines introduce the espousal musical composition in an amusing and ironical tone : it is, afterwards all, the adequate to(p) matter of the whole novel and a recurrent theme throughout the nineteenth century (and ever since the early ordinals) ; especially when the fact that Jane Austen staid a single char is taken into account. The plot of the novel is driven by the interrogative sentence and satire of the difficulties faced by any decent cleaning woman in pursuit of a husband. Five sums occur in the course of the book : Mr Collins and Charlotte Lucass, colonel Forsters, Mr Wickham and Lydia Bennets, a marriage which has been arranged by Mr Fitz volitioniam Darcy, in order to preserve the Bennets family honor, after the giddy lovers scandalous elopement, and allow Mr Darcy to make amends for his demeanour towards Elizabeth Bennet ; and that two final of Mr Bingley and Jane Bennet, and Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. Two other couples are introduced as a constant reference : the Bennets and the Gardiners.
All this meaning that marriage is indeed the central topic, seen in different ways. few other parts of Pride and Prejudice deal with marriage proposals, including the one made to Elizabeth by Mr Collins, a worldly clergyman ; a moment which is all the more funny since his proposal is incongruous and ridiculous.
