The largest minority groups today are Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, Blacks/African Americans, Latinos/Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Arab Americans (Edelman & Mandel, 2010). Nurses lease to respect and project cultures unfamiliar to their own to give substantially care to all patients, majority and minority. To be culturally competent as a nurse, there must first be awareness of the ego; of bingles own values, beliefs, and customs (Edelman & Mandel, 2010). The usance of the Heritage judicial decision can serve as a building block to cultural awareness. Once aware of ones own culture the competent nurse should look to out knowledge of other cultures (Edelman & Mandel). The Heritage Assessment can then be a marionette for nurses to mapping to gather important data to arrange care plans permit for minority populations based on the individual. Nurses today are non only providing care to different ethnic populations but alike working alongside of them.

The Heritage Assessment is useful to befriend look at people holistically. My use of the Heritage tool and interview with my own family along with two others, was a good exercise to compare the differences in health maintenance, protection and reappearance of three different cultures. Individuals are who they are because of where they come from. Nurses need to address all aspects of the individual, not only their illness, to properly cover up and educate the patient.
