The Lords and serfs were tied together in a binding pact that provided land and protection for all. The feudal system evolved from the Tenure system as it involved a form of exchanging land for protection. Lords would be approached by peasants looking for protection. In exchange for the protection they seeked, the peasants would offer their land and everything on it as long as they would be able to stay on the land as tenants and farm it.

If the Lord agreed, he would be required to provide protection for the peasants that would be living on his land. To do this he would hire warriors to guard his land and the people living on it. Soon the Tenure system became the Feudal system. The Lords were granted the peasants land by the King.
