Design, Measurement & Analysis
Overview of Statistical Methods in Psychology
Why Statisticsâ"this class, combined with enquiry methods, is intended to teach statistical reasoning. Statistical reasoning is the root word of the scientific methodâ"to observe, develop hypotheses, systematically test those hypotheses by collecting and analyzing data derived from our observations.
Statistical thinking involves the ability to go to the big picture and to consider such relevant factors as the context, source of data, and sampling method; and to form conclusions and identify possible implications. It involves critical thinking, the ability to make sense of results, determining if results ar statistically significant and practically meaningful.
We start with a guessingâ"our model of the world, or at least the characteristic of star or more variables and their relationship. How do we validate our hypothesis? This challenge underscores one of the reasons we do research and use statistics.
Statistics: the science of be after studies and experiments, obtaining data, and then organizing, summarizing, presenting, analyzing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions based on the data.
By these methods we approach our accumulation of knowledge.
Research and Statistical methods involve three relate aspects:
- Design
- Measurement
-Analysis
This class will focus on Analysis, but we enquire to be familiar with Design and Measurement because they help lay out the appropriate analysis.
The purpose of analysis is to rule out the opening that our observations and conclusions could have occurred by chance by determining the luck of the obtained outcome under the assumption that only chance is operating.
two branches of statistics:
Descriptive statistics organize, summarize and communicate a group of numerical observations--data;
Data-- a collection of observations such as measurements or great deal responses.
